Black Friday: can your store handle your advertising?

Before increasing spend, complete a real purchase, check the contribution after discount and agree when to pause the campaign.

NOTES / E-COMMERCE / CAMPAIGN READINESS

The banner is ready. The discount is set. The email is waiting to go out. All that remains is to increase the ad budget. Before doing that, I would try something less exciting: buy something from your own store on a phone.

Test the whole journey, not just the homepage

Start with the campaign link. Open a product, select a variant, add it to the basket, apply the coupon and reach payment. Check delivery costs and the free-shipping threshold after discount. Then verify that payment arrived, the order status changed correctly and the confirmation email was delivered.

Use a controlled test order and establish how you will cancel or refund it beforehand. A green message on screen is not a substitute for checking the payment and order records.

Calculate the discount against what remains

A hypothetical example excluding taxes: the selling price is €100, while the product and variable fulfilment costs total €65. That leaves €35 before advertising. After a 20% discount, revenue is €80 and only €15 remains.

If acquiring a new order costs €18, this example loses €3 before fixed costs. More orders will not fix that particular calculation. A different basket or repeat purchase may change the economics; do not count a hoped-for future return as money already earned.

Your own campaign can create load

Anura’s seasonal campaign article recommends checking measurement and traffic quality before increasing spend. It is material from an anti-fraud vendor, not independent evidence of how many bots your store will face.

My additional check would be concurrent work: will email sending, a product import and arriving shoppers compete for the same server resources? Coordinate job timings before the campaign and review existing load data. An Analytics spike alone does not identify shoppers, bots or a mixture of both.

Agree on the signs that mean pause

Name the person allowed to pause ads or email sending. Write down the limits: payment errors, unacceptable page delays or acquisition costs above the calculated contribution. Choose thresholds for your own store rather than copying a universal number from the internet.

Campaign readiness means being able to fulfil the extra order and understand what it leaves you. Establish that while the advertising budget is still unspent.
